1940 Hawthorne, American

The Montgomery Wards Hawthorne "All American" was the top of the line model in 1940 and 1941. It featured a 2 speed shifter built right into the tank. The model pictured here is not the 2-speed model and is refered to as just the "American". Two versions of the bike were produced. The bike pictured was produced by the Cleveland Welding Company, and another very similar version was produced by H.P. Snyder, makers of Rollfast bicycles. The "American" was designed by a leading industrial desinger of the time named Walter Dorwin Teague.
