1960 Bowden Spacelander
The Bicycle of the Month for May is Mike Spanglers 1960 Bowden Spacelander, featuring a fiberglass monocoque frame that allowed for very radical space-age styling. Benjamin Bowden designed this bike back in the 1940’s and even produced an all aluminum prototype that appeared in trade magazines in 1949 but was not produced and sold until 1960. Today it is a well recognized icon of American bicycle history.
